Can Alternative Medicine Help Treat Degenerative Eye Disorders?

What is meant by alternative medicine for eye diseases and vision disorders?  Alternative medicine is defined as a broad range of health practices, products, and therapies used instead of conventional (mainstream) medical treatments, encompassing everything from herbal remedies and acupuncture to homeopathy and special diets.

Alternative treatments are available for treating many eye diseases including retinitis pigmentosa, wet and/or dry macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, rod or cone dystrophy, and a host of optic nerve disorders, stroke to the eyes, or stroke to the brain when it affects the eyes.

Most of the alternative treatments for treating degenerative eye diseases work by healing the damage caused by the disease.  There is no cure, only treatments that manage the progression or heal the damage, which can restore some vision in many patients Macular degeneration is thought to occur as a result of amyloid beta plaques build up in the retina, but can also be due to oxidative stress.  The microacupuncture treatments I do at my clinic in Arkansas, help these conditions by repairing the damage.  (Microacupuncture is a specialized for of acupuncture not related to any Asian system of acupuncture) Likewise with glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa and other degenerative eye conditions, where oxidation plays a role in the degeneration of the tissue, healing can occur by treating with microacupuncture.  In the case of glaucoma and retinitis pigmentosa, along with microacupuncture I recommend high doses of antioxidants to offset the oxidative stress.  For diabetic retinopathy, the microacupuncture helps to repair the damage to the microvessels in the eyes.  Microacupuncture can also help with peripheral neuropathy, often secondary to diabetes.
